Xanana Gusmão: Strategies for the Future

A collection of speeches by His Excellency Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, Prime Minister of The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.

Selected from speeches given over the period 2007-2011, this volume is defined by those relating to the Prime Minister’s Strategic Development Plan for Timor-Leste – a plan that sets a vision for the next two decades and begins a new stage of bold national development for this young and promising country.

The book also provides a view of the country’s current position and its potential in terms of social capital, infrastructure and economic development through speeches covering topics such as nationbuilding and peacebuilding, development, governance, international meetings, law and security. Inherent in the speeches is the theme of forgiveness – a rare and unique trait for a resilient nation that has suffered so much in its recent history.

‘This collection of Xanana Gusmão’s speeches indicates something about the man, and more about the challenges ahead for Timor-Leste. However, for those of us who already know something of Xanana, this collection is a modest testament to his leadership and character. Like other great leaders, Xanana has shown by example the importance of forgiveness. It is not about forgetting the past or granting impunity to those who have caused suffering; rather, it is about understanding the past and learning how to move forward into the future.’ – Major General (Retd) Michael G. Smith AO

Heart of Arnhem Land

In 1974, François Giner had his first taste of northern Australia, not realising that it would be the start of a 36-year sojourn and adventure, far from his hometown of Lodève, in southern France.

As a teenager, Giner had set out to discover new horizons and people. He encountered Tuaregs and Peuhls in the Sahara Desert, and Momoktobecs in the New Hebrides. Now he headed across Australia to discover its indigenous heart.

“As beautiful as Australia was, for me it remained silent without the voice of its original inhabitants. I knew nothing of them, I had read nothing about them, I was not an ethnologist, and had no preconceived ideas to distort my perception of Aboriginal culture. I wanted to live beside them and understand their values – especially those that we ourselves have lost.”

With the blessing of the local Aboriginal community, he established Bodeidei Camp, to receive visitors interested in experiencing something of indigenous culture and country, or others wanting to hunt buffalo. Heart of Arnhem Land shares Giner’s experiences of living and working in this remote region.

Heart of Arnhem Land is a personal journey of discovery and self-discovery, but above all it is a cry for a beloved community whose culture lies on the edge of extinction. Giner’s memoir aims to remind people that those swaying black shadows with haggard eyes crossing streets in Katherine, Alice Springs or Darwin, were once free men, who have been deprived of their bearings and their dreams. En Terre Aborigène has sold over 15,000 copies in France alone, now this best-selling book is published in English for the first time.

We Talked of Other Things: The life and letters of Arthur Wheen 1897-1971

Writer, artist, war hero, saint, viper – Arthur Wheen has been described as an ideal companion whose letters ‘disclose a delightful range of wit, oblique fancy, irreverent humour and erudition.’ (Australian Dictionary of Biography)

This story of his life, told through letters, begins in 1915 with his enlistment in the AIF. Wheen became the only soldier in his battalion to win the Military Medal three times. His first hand experience of war and his brilliance as a linguist ensured the success of his translation of the German classic All Quiet on the Western Front, first published in English in 1929. Received with widespread acclaim, its author, Erich Maria Remarque credited Wheen with a ‘sensitive artistry [that] turned the translation into an original’.

After leaving Australia for England in 1920, Wheen’s subsequent journey through decades of the 20th century brought him in contact with writers and artists such as T.S. Eliot, Herbert Read and David Jones. As librarian at the Victoria and Albert Museum, his knowledge of languages and cultures expanded and enriched their collection of publications on aesthetics and the philosophy of art.

In his writing Wheen often drew upon history and nature for inspiration and metaphor. To quote one reader: ‘Well this paragraph is about cheese. But so, so much more. Life, the universe and everything. Just stunning.’

'A valuable contribution to cancer literature [that] warrants wide readership.' Ian Gawler OAM, Founder, The Gawler Foundation

'This bravely honest book is deeply moving and emotional.' Sally Morgan, author of My Place

In 2004 Karen Leibovitch was a busy wife and mother of three young children, running a small counselling practice from home. But a routine visit to her GP led to a diagnosis of oral cancer, and within a matter of weeks Karen's life was irrevocably changed.

Surgery saved her life but left her with many challenges and a distressing sense of emotional disconnection from the family she loves.

Desperate to find her way back, she is told it will take two years to regain what she has lost. The phrase two years to 'normal' becomes a barometer against which she measures her journey towards recovery.

A loving and inspirational memoir written with honesty, insight and a self-deprecating sense of humour, Two years to 'normal' will reassure those facing similar circumstances that they and their families are not alone in their experiences.

My Mate Steve Irwin

The perfect present for: lovers of real-life adventure stories and Steve Irwin fans.

'A great mate is one of those things most Aussie blokes take for granted - until he's not there.'

I don't quite know how it all happened. One moment I was laughing with my teenage surfing buddy Stevo as he got hammered by the suckiest waves on the Sunshine Coast, the next I was grinning next to him in my best man's suit at his wedding in Oregon.

Stevo was my mate. We would go camping, hang out at the beach and his family's wildlife park, play sport, and act like silly buggers. Then our friendship deepened as we trusted each other with our lives catching wild crocs in remote Queensland.

My Mate Steve Irwin offers never before seen photos and untold stories of the bloke, the conservationist, the reptile lover, the life of the party, the hard worker, the mate. My mate, who was more crocodile whisperer than hunter.

This is a heartfelt memoir and boy's own adventure story about growing up with Steve Irwin, by one of his mates, Tony Frisby.

http://www.facebook.com/MyMateSteveIrwin

Tony Frisby is now a parks ranger based at Yeppoon in Queensland. His early friendship with Steve Irwin sparked three decades of saving wildlife, from joining Steve and Bob Irwin on reptile-catching trips in remote bush to becoming one of the early curators at the Irwins’ reptile and fauna park (now Australia Zoo). Julie Gatehouse is a Sunshine Coast-based journalist with 19 years’ experience in newspapers and magazines. She worked with Tony to write this book.

Timor Lives! Speeches of Freedom and Independence

The perfect present for: lovers of modern history and politics.

'Xanana is the saviour of the nation... without his iron will, total abnegation, vision and courage, Timor-Leste would not be free today.' - From the Preface by Jose Ramos-Horta, Co-Laureate of the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize

Timor Lives! takes us on the journey of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to nationhood, as articulated by its charismatic 'poet warrior' leader, President Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao.

Included are the President's Independence Day and Flag Raising ceremony speeches and his inaugural speech to the United Nations General Assembly. The speeches examine the creation of the Constitution and Xanana Gusmao's personal quest for reconciliation, peace, and justice in his country.

In a world increasingly beset by cultural conflicts and human rights abuses, these speeches highlight what may be achieved by the dedicated efforts of individuals, fighting for justice. They also document a rare event in the democratic world: the foundation of a nation.

At the withdrawal of Portugal from its colonies in 1974, East Timor was invaded by Indonesia . Xanana Gusmao became the revolutionary leader of his people; escaping capture by moving to the mountains where he continued to run a guerilla campaign of resistance against the invading forces. On 14 April 2002 Xanana Gusmao won a landslide victory to become President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, as it is now known.

Juxtapositions: An intimate portrait of Sydney (Paperback)

'...a handsome, graceful work capturing Sydney in a manner worthy of Max Dupain, David Moore or Olive Cotton.'

- The Honourable Bob Carr, Premier of New South Wales

Selected as the Month in a Minute book recommendation, Vogue

'When we think of Sydney and the photographers who have captured this city we think of people like Max Dupain... Well now there's a new photographic force to keep an eye out for.'

- The Sydney Weekly

Award winning Ukrainian photographer and photojournalist, Valentin Shkolny has created a photograph album of Sydney to be viewed as a short film - where the relationships between photos will make us smile, admire shapes and light, and where morality and emotions are central.

Designed for those who want more than just pictures of Sydney's traditional landmarks this album takes the reader on a street-level journey: to the harbour, the people, the streets, and the details that often go unnoticed as we move around the city.

Juxtapositions will make Sydney-siders re-think their city and give visitors a book unlike any other, to take home as a memory of their visit. The album contains a poem specially chosen by Les Murray.

'Valentin Shkolny shows us a Sydney filled with wit and humor, a Sydney we have overlooked.'
- From the Introduction by Alan Davies, Curator of photographs, Mitchell Library, Sydney.

Valentin Shkolny has published many books in his homeland of the Ukraine and worked as a photojournalist for many large newspapers in the Ukraine and Russia, including Pravda. Due to the lack of freedom his work was always edited leaving him unable to display much what his camera recorded.

Now living in Australia, Valentin is free to work with the subject matter of his choice, to reveal everything his camera sees and apply his unique perspective to his new home. To produce this album Valentin walked Sydney streets looking at the city with his guiding principle always in mind: 'Let the moment stop for an instant as it is beautiful.'
